Connor’s fine win in Lichfield draw

Birmingham Division 5

Connor Whetnall lost his first few league games but on the evidence of this match he has started to look a seasoned player. He was cool and calculated as he punished his opponent’s early blunder, forced him into a Zigswang situation and resignation.

His win gave Lichfield a 2-2 draw against Kynock A. There were draws on boards two and three and Phil Sykes’ game on two was the last to finish, Phil lost a pawn early in the game and then with a Bishop sacrifice won back his pawn. He then held his position well until the prospect of winning a piece arose. Entering a Q+ Bishop v Queen end game there was an seemingly endless squence of checks and with both players on 30 seconds they agreed a draw.

Albert Chacko offered a draw on board one as they entered the end game. “I got bored” said Albert who has traded on wins and losses all season. John Fryer on board three blundered a Bishop and was eventually forced to resign.(Match played. (Match played 16th February)
