Peter’s triumph against the odds was in vain

Cannock League Division 3

Peter Rose was conceding a couple of hundred rating points in his board one game against Tamworth and his outstanding winning performance was not quite enough to prevent Tamworth securing a 2.5 – 1.5 victory against Lichfield’s 3B side,

Peter’s opponent made a rare and unsound opening, failed to reverse a Bishop move and left himself with obvious weaknesses to target. Finally connecting his Rooks threatened some counterplay but Peter’s advanced pieces surrounding the King proved too much.

John Fryer had to contend with a Larsen opening which he had not encountered before. His best defence was countered and the game was already lost when he made a mistake which clinched matters. Ellliott Ward earned a fine draw against a much stronger opponent and for the first time an Elliott’s drawn game lasted longer than 20 minutes. Father Simon was delighted as Elliott’s normally plays blitz chess almost entirely. Connor Whetnall, playing his first league game for years, showed in defeat that he has a lot of potential.
