Albert’s nightmare end game gives Rugeley victory

Albert Chacko had every chance to win his game against Kath Hiley and with it the match, He won the opening and the middle game but then relaxed and got the end game all wrong, allowing a ‘crertain’ win to slip into a defeat.

The match result was 2.5 – 1.5 in Rugeley’s favour with the three top boards being draws. It was a night of missed chances because Ben Nevett-Farman established a dominiant position until an error in the end game led to a draw. On Board 2 Queens were exchanged early and it was Mircea Mesesan who gained some iniatative but not enough and the game ended in deadlock. Yuriy Slobodyuk’s game on board three looked drawish from the opening stages. Attempts by both players to generate ounterplay came to nothing other than a draw. (Match played 9th February)
