Birminham League Division 5

David Fone, playing the crucial last match thought he had lost. He had a runaway pawn on the outside lane but it could be caught by the King. It was a classic King and pawn battle. His opponent had two isolated pawns near the centre of the board and it was impossible for David to stop both wasn’t it. The watchers appeared to think so and David resigned. But to his chagrin, David later discovered analysis which showed that the game and the match with Shirley ands Wythall could have been drawn. “It just shows you should play on” said David.

It was one of those nights for earlier Matty Blackwell on board one outplayed his opponenent in the opening and was pawn up when when he blundered a simple tactic and completely threw his game. Fortunately Peter Rose on board three con tinued his recent climb up the club ladder board with his seventh win and another team member having a good season, Stephen Shields , also won. The match was drawn 2-2 with Lichfield slipping to second place.
